childbirthing class

Tonight, J and I go to the first of 4 childbirthing classes at the hospital where I am planning to have Jillian.  I don’t know what to expect or exactly what we’ll learn, but I’m hoping to come away more knowledgeable about the birthing process, options about best positions during labor, and pain management techniques.  I also want to learn more about how to care for the baby during the first weeks of life.  All I can picture is a room full of couples where the woman is laying on a pillow and her partner or coach is behind her giving advice (very idealized vision based on t.v.)!

So, this Thursday, I’m thankful for the opportunity to learn about birthing and to have my bestest friend to share in all the learning!

Hi! Marianne forwarded me your blog when she found out I was pregnant. I’ve been reading your past posts and love your style. Since you’re an athletic person, I thought I’d ask you about an odd side effect that I’ve noticed: I can’t do pushups anymore. I’m at week 18 now, and for the past couple weeks, I can barely do regular old push ups. I can still handle free weights, and I’m not having any particular trouble with yoga postures, but all of a sudden my pectoral muscles have given way. Did you experience anything like that?

I look forward to reading more posts!

    • hi Renate! i’m glad you like my blog. i figure it will be nice to go back and read my thoughts after the baby is here. i’m not sure why you’re having trouble with push ups. i started to do girl push ups (with knees bent) just because i wasn’t used to the extra weight. maybe this is what you are experiencing – difficulty adjusting to the extra weight? i did notice that my running abilities seemed to change almost overnight – one day i could run, the next day i couldn’t. just listen to your body and do what you can!
